As part of the Absent Artists’ Collaborative we were each a given private studio by the organiser, as a space to continue with our own practice amongst other creatives. As a result of this opportunity I decided to make a performance piece to branch out of my normal practice into the unknown.
EAT.THE.BEET
A video performance that explores the polarities between rational and irrational food fears by flicking between humorous and serious scenarios. It is a nonverbal conversation between artist and audience, as they challenge one other to an increased state of anxiety, raising the expectation to perform and complete set tasks. This piece intends to challenge what is seen as normal and abnormal behaviour, whilst sensitively suggesting problems that go unnoticed within our culture. For example, the way that sugar (an addictive drug) is purposefully advertised at children. Or how individuals accept the information fed to them as truth, and therefore fail to question the status quo, or acknowledge any predicament they may find themselves in.
